IIT and NIT Are you an Engineering or medical aspirant? Then it is a must that you know about these institutions in detail. IITs and NITs are engineering institutions of national importance and rank as the topmost institutions for attaining graduation in engineering. When it comes to the medical aspirants, the ideal institutes for higher studies are AIIMS and government medical colleges across the country. Here, like IIT’s and NIT’s, AIIMS are also institutes of national importance. Let’s have a look at IITs and NITs in detail. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are premiere autonomous public technical and research universities located across India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance. Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council (IIT Council), which oversees their administration. IITs are generally ranked above other engineering colleges in India for Engineering. The IITs receive comparatively higher grants than other engineering colleges in India. As of 2019, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 13,376. The only major requirement to admit to these institutions at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is to pass the JEE Advanced and GATE respectively. According to Outlook India's Top Engineering Colleges of 2017, the top four engineering colleges within India were IITs. IIT Delhi was the highest-ranked IIT internationally, ranking 172nd in the QS World University Rankings of 2018, followed by IIT Bombay (179th), while 3 other IITs (IIT Madras at 264, IIT Kanpur at 293, and IIT Kharagpur at 308) make the top 310. In the 2019 QS World University Ranking, IIT Bombay ranked highest at 162, followed by IIT Delhi (172), IIT Madras (264), IIT Kanpur (283), IIT Kharagpur (295), IIT Roorkee (381), and IIT Guwahati (472). Both IIT and NIT are equally responsible for the growth of the country in the fields of science and technology. Both IIT and NIT graduates are known to have achieved notable positions in leading companies both in India and abroad. When it comes to the quality of education provided IITs are ahead of the NITs. The professors in the IITs are better and more qualified than the NITs. The way of education and approach is also better in IIT, but it doesn’t mean that NITs are not good. Both IITs and NITs are extremely good at providing education and producing good engineers, but at the same time, the top IIT colleges have an edge because of their high standard of studies. As of 2019, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs was 21,133 and for postgraduate programs, 10,550 in all the 31 NITs put together. AIIMS The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of public medical colleges that have been declared as institutes of national importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the parent institute, was established under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956, as a “temple of modern India” to achieve Prime Minister Nehru’s vision of having a center of excellence in medical sciences in India. Since then, 22 more institutes were announced. As of January 2020, fifteen institutes are operating and eight more are expected to become operational until 2025. Today, it is among the top medical colleges in India. The institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research, and patient care. It conducts teaching programs in medical and Para-medical courses both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its degrees. AIIMS also runs a college of nursing and trains students for BSc (Hons) Nursing post-certificate degrees. As of now, AIIMS offers admission to 807 seats, which is available across nine functional institutions — New Delhi, Rishikesh, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Guntur, and Nagpur. The government has announced the establishment of 12 more AIIMS institutes which are likely to come up in the coming years. In 2018 and 2019, AIIMS New Delhi topped in the medical category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2019). The institute provides ample opportunities to participate in national and international conferences as well as exchange programs. Such exposure helps students achieve standards at par with the best in the world. AIIMS students have gone on to become doyens not just in India but in international institutions as well. When you know your seniors and alumni are leading doctors setting standards in the field of medicine globally, you have great role models to inspire you.
